Third Grade News
Week of February 9th, 2015

 

Spelling

TEST FRIDAY

 

Reading
The students will continue reading The Boxcar Children.
The test on Chapters 7-9 will be on Wednesday, February 11th.
The test on Chapters 10-13 will be on Wednesday, February 18th.

 

English
Students will continue learning about a strategy for writing Simple Sentences and checking them to make sure they are complete.  We will be focusing on parts of speech (nouns, verbs, and adjectives), subjects and predicates, and types of sentences (statement/declarative, question/interrogative, exclamation/exclamatory, and command/imperative).

 

Math
We will continue to review addition and subtraction.  We will also review multiplication facts for 0-5 & 10.  We will continue learning the multiplication facts for 9, 11, 12.  Please work with your child on memorizing these multiplication facts.  We will finish with the unit on Time.  The TEST on Time has been re-scheduled for Thursday, February, 12th.  Our next unit will be Money.

SOL 3.8
   The student will determine, by counting, the value of a collection of bills and coins whose total value is $5.00 or less, compare the value of the bills and coins, and make change.
SOL 3.5   The student will recall multiplication facts through the twelves table, and the corresponding division facts.
SOL 3.6   The student will represent multiplication and division, using area, set, and number line models, and create and solve problems that involve multiplication of two whole numbers, one factor 99 or less and the second factor 5 or less.
SOL 3.11   The student will
a) tell time to the nearest minute, using analog and digital clocks; and
b) determine elapsed time in one-hour increments over a 12-hour period.
SOL 3.12   The student will identify equivalent periods of time, including relationships among days, months, and years, as well as minutes and hours.

 

Science
We will continue with the unit on Matter.  Study Guides for this unit were sent home in the Red Nikki Folder on February 4th The TEST on Matter will be Thursday, February 19th.  Our next unit will be on Simple Machines.

The student will investigate and understand basic patterns and cycles occurring in nature. Key concepts include
a) patterns of natural events such as day and night, seasonal changes, simple phases of the moon, and tides;
SOL 3.3   The student will investigate and understand that objects are made of materials that can be described by their physical properties. Key concepts include
a) objects are made of one or more materials;
b) physical properties remain the same as the material is changed in visible size; and
c) visible physical changes are identified.                                                                                   

Social Studies
We will continue with the unit on European Exploration.  Study guides for this unit were sent home in the Red Nikki Folder on Friday, January 16th.  We will begin studying the French explorer - Jacques Cartier.  The TEST on Cartier will be Friday, February 13th.  Our final explorer for this unit will be Christopher Newport from England.  The TEST on Newport will be Friday, February 20th.

a) describing the accomplishments of Christopher Columbus, Juan Ponce de Léon, Jacques Cartier, and Christopher Newport;

d) locating the regions in the Americas explored by Christopher Columbus (San Salvador in the Bahamas), Juan Ponce de Léon (near St. Augustine, Florida), Jacques Cartier (near Quebec, Canada), and Christopher Newport (Jamestown, Virginia);

Students will continue learning about a strategy for writing Simple Sentences and checking them to make sure they are complete.  We will be focusing on parts of speech (nouns, verbs, and adjectives), subjects and predicates, and types of sentences (statement/declarative, question/interrogative, exclamation/exclamatory, and command/imperative).

 

Math
We will be working on multiplication facts for 0, 1, 2, 5, and 10.  Please work with your child on memorizing these multiplication facts.  We will also begin our unit on Measurement.

SOL 3.5   The student will recall multiplication facts through the twelves table, and the corresponding division facts.

SOL 3.6   The student will represent multiplication and division, using area, set, and number line models, and create and solve problems that involve multiplication of two whole numbers, one factor 99 or less and the second factor 5 or less.

SOL 3.9   The student will estimate and use U.S. Customary and metric units to measure
a)  length to the nearest 1/2-inch, inch, foot, yard, centimeter, and meter;
b)  liquid volume in cups, pints, quarts, gallons, and liters;
c)  weight/mass in ounces, pounds, grams, and kilograms; and
d)  area and perimeter.

SOL 3.10   The student will
a)  measure the distance around a polygon in order to determine perimeter; and
b)  count the number of square units needed to cover a given surface in order to determine area.

SOL 3.13   The student will read temperature to the nearest degree from a Celsius thermometer and a Fahrenheit thermometer. Real thermometers and physical models of thermometers will be used.

 

Science
The TEST on Adaptations will be Tuesday, November 25th.  The Adaptations Study Guides were sent home in the red Nikki folder on Wednesday, November 5th.  Our next unit will be on Life Cycles.  The TEST on Life Cycles has been scheduled for Wednesday, December 17th.  We will study Earth and Moon Cycles in January.

The students will continue to examine the requirements of a complete sentence.  They will begin learning about a strategy for writing Simple Sentences and checking them to make sure they are complete.


Math
We will continue with the unit on comparing and ordering numbers.  We will also be working with +/- fact families. 

SOL 3.1  The student will
b) round whole numbers, 9,999 or less, to the nearest ten, hundred, and thousand; and
c) compare two whole numbers between 0 and 9,999, using symbols (>, <, or = ) and words (greater than, less than, or equal to).

SOL 3.2  The student will recognize and use the inverse relationships between addition/subtraction and multiplication/division to complete basic fact sentences. The student will use these relationships to solve problems.

 

Science
We will finish with our unit on Ecosystems.  We will continue with aquatic ecosystems.  At the beginning of the week we will focus on fresh water ecosystems.  We will review all ecosystems on Wednesday, October 8th.  The TEST on Habitats (Terrestrial and Aquatic) has been re-scheduled for Thursday, October 9thThe Habitats Study Guide was sent home in the red Nikki folder on Friday, August 24th.

The students will continue with their study of ancient Greece this week.  Study information for this unit will be kept in the students’ Social Studies Interactive Notebooks.  The Ancient Greece Study Guides were sent home in the red Nikki folder on Monday, September 22nd.  The TEST on Ancient Greece has been re-scheduled for Tuesday, October 14th.

SOL 3.1  The student will explain how the contributions of ancient Greece and Rome have influenced the present world in terms of architecture, government (direct and representative democracy), and sports.

SOL 3.4  
The student will develop map skills by
a) locating Greece, Rome, and West Africa;
b) describing the physical and human characteristics of Greece, Rome, and West Africa;
c) explaining how the people of Greece, Rome, and West Africa adapted to and/or changed their environment to meet their needs.

SOL 3.7  The student will explain how producers in ancient Greece, Rome, and the West African empire of Mali used natural resources, human resources, and capital resources in the production of goods and services.
